Rooney may not play

Wayne Rooney may miss England's Euro 2012 qualifier against Switzerland because of newspaper reports concerning his private life, according to BBC Radio 5 Live.

The forward was an instrumental figure in England's fine 4-0 win over Bulgaria at Wembley on Friday as the Three Lions returned to winning ways.

The story, published in the News of the World and theSunday Mirror, comes as a huge blow for England manager Fabio Capello, who is already without forward Peter Crouch for the Switzerland clash on Tuesday.

After a disappointing World Cup campaign, 24-year-old Rooney showed his creative spark as he played a major part in all four goals for England against Bulgaria, but Capello may have to find a new partner for Jermain Defoe in Basle.

Either West Ham United's Carlton Cole or Sunderland's Darren Bent - both inexperienced at international level - look set to get the nod by Capello.

However, a Football Association source has indicated that Rooney is still expected to fly to Switzerland as no decision has been made yet on whether he will make the trip.

Capello will definitely have to do without Tottenham's Michael Dawson in the heart of his defence, with West Ham United's Matthew Upson, Everton's Phil Jagielka or Bolton's Gary Cahill all possibilities to fill the breach.

First-choice central defenders John Terry and Rio Ferdinand are out of the reckoning with hamstring and knee problems respectively.
