Iker Casillas: Real Madrid are building for future
Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas has made a plea to the club’s supporters to show patience with the team this season, and added that he believes coach Jose Mourinho is “building a team for the future”.
San Iker is now in his 20th year at los Blancos having begun his youth career at the age of just nine, but has been a member of the first team squad since 1999, and believes he can still learn new things under the Portuguese boss.
In an interview with newspaper ABC, Casillas stated that he is enjoying working with Mourinho, but stressed to the fans that he is constructing a long-term project at the Santiago Bernabeu, and he must be allowed time to create the team.
He said: “We are building a future and we have a dream. It is not good to obsess about titles, we are taking things day by day, game by game, and every day is important.
“It is very easy for the coach to connect well with everyone. On the pitch he demands a lot. He has been a teacher.”
Casillas also commented on the difficulty of the Champions League group that Real Madrid face, with Auxerre, Ajax and Serie A giants Milan offering formidable opposition.
He added: “The group is complicated, but that is why the players are very motivated. Playing against smaller teams is often more dangerous. It is vital to start with a home win versus Ajax.”
