Germany legend Lothar Matthaus named new Bulgaria coach
Former Germany international Lothar Matthaus has been appointed the new manager of Bulgaria on a two-year deal.
Bulgaria were in the market for a new head coach following the departure of Stanimir Stoilov earlier this month. Stoilov decided to throw in the towel after Bulgaria's disappointing start to the Euro 2012 qualifying campaign, which included a 4-0 defeat to England.
"It was not easy at all to find a new coach in such a short period of time and I am very glad that we managed to do it. I hope that everybody will be supporting him,” Borislav Mihaylov, head of the Bulgarian Football Union, said to reporters.
Matthaus has coached clubs such as Partizan Belgrade, Rapid Wien, Red Bull Salzburg and Maccabi Netanya in the past. He also has experience as national team coach after his spell in charge of Hungary.
Bulgaria currently occupy last place in the table in Group G of the Euro 2012 qualifying campaign and have yet to collect their first point after two matches.
