Statement by heads of Evangelical churches in Jordan denouncing Quran burning

Media reports have communicated that a church in the United State- which has no connection to our evangelicals churches in Jordan- is planning to burn copies of the Holy Quran on the remembrance day of September 11.

We denounce this act that contradicts our Christian faith and its call for peace, tolerance and respect for the other. These actions are also in contradiction with human values and the concept of respect the faith of the other.

The spiritual leaders of these evangelical churches signing this statement (Baptists, Alliance, Nazarene, Evangelical free church and Assemblies of God) as well as pastors and lay people call on all to denounce this act and to hold on to the spirit of unity and love which exists in Jordan. We declare it publicly –Christians and Moslems- that we are proud of the national unity in our country and consider this strong bond the pillar of our nation.

We call on all to respond to these acts by deepening our respect for the other and the freedom of faith, standing in defense of all those who claim to be religious but act in such low way. Our Bible teaches us that God loves the entire world irrespective of their background and ethnicity and that this love is not rude and does not delight in evil

As evangelical churches in Jordan we denounce this radical behavior and call on this church to stop its plans to burn the Quran, even though this church has no administrative or any other connection with any church in the Arab world. We are proud of our Arab identity under the leadership of King Abdullah II. May God protect Jordan and our beloved King.
