Local and International NGOs call for dialogue with the government on project approvals mechanisms

Three leading coalitions of non-governmental organizations in Jordan representing 200 leading and active NGOs issued a rare joint statement Monday calling for “collaboration, efficient implementation, and partnerships to ensure rapid response to urgent humanitarian needs, as well as long-term development goals.”

The Jordan International NGO Forum, Himam the coalition for Civil society organizations, and JONAF said in a two-page statement that while the organizations that they represent “fulfill the government’s goal in the area of public service” they are “still subject to security and changed that can hinder implementation and conflict with national strategy.

The three NGOs coalition said that lack of coordination is caused by the fact that “various bodes prioritize different issues, causing a discrepancy with national strategies.” The organization calls for dialogue to overcome the “poor communication between the government and NGOs” which often causes confusion about each party’s goals, roles, and responsibilities.

The statement concluded with these recommendations on behalf of over 200 civil society organizations that they collectively represent. The recommendations call for enhanced transparency by publicly sharing information about all projects needing approvals and the status of the projects with commits to do so in clear time frames. Thirdly the NGOs call for empowering an entity that will evaluate projects and grant approvals to ensure coordination and communication between NGOs.

The statement called on the Ministry of Planning and International COordiantion to "take a more proactive role in communicating the priorities set by the government. In addition, all Jordanian partners must also comply with the Foreign Funding Mechanism approval process."
