Amman – The Department of State has awarded a USD1m grant to a Norwegian non-governmental organization to clear the Jordan side of the Jordanian-Syrian border of landmines and explosive remnants of war (ERW) to enhance development opportunities.
The Department’s Bureau of Political Military Affairs/Office of Weapons Removal and Abatement is funding Norwegian Peoples Aid (NPA) for its completion of the northern border project. The NPA will clear the 104-kilometer mine belt along the Jordan-Syrian border with manual verification teams, machines and mine detection dogs (MDD).
Since 1996, the United States has provided over USD19.75m in humanitarian mine action assistance to Jordan.
