MP Adnan Mashouqa Questions Government on Israel’s Gas Contract Breach and Supply Risks

MP Adnan Mashouqa has submitted a parliamentary question to the government regarding legal measures related to the energy sector, following developments linked to the suspension of gas supply from Israel. The question was raised under Article 96 of the Constitution and Article 123 of the House of Representatives’ internal regulations, requesting official clarifications from the Prime Minister on the government’s response to the crisis.

The parliamentary question included five main points, most notably the legal steps taken by the government, represented by the National Electric Power Company (NEPCO), to address any breach of contract by the Israeli side, and whether an official notice of contractual violation had been issued. The MP also inquired about the possibility of resorting to international arbitration to claim compensation, and the estimated direct and indirect damages assessed so far.

The question further addressed whether the government had considered demanding specific performance to compel the supplier to resume gas supply according to the agreement’s terms, as well as evaluating the option of terminating the contract in case of continued disruption, including the associated legal and financial costs and whether penalties could be avoided.

Additionally, MP Mashouqa asked the government’s stance on the supplier’s invocation of the force majeure clause, and whether its use would be considered unlawful if production at the gas field continues.

This parliamentary question comes amid rapidly evolving regional developments affecting energy supplies, highlighting the urgent need to ensure continuity and mitigate potential economic impacts on the domestic market.

The MP concluded his message by reaffirming his respect for the government and calling for clear responses that demonstrate the state’s readiness to address any contractual breaches and safeguard Jordan’s national interests.
