Hanan Ashrawi, I Do Not Own Any Land in Jordan, Not Even a Single Inch
Former member of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization, Hanan Ashrawi, categorically denied circulating claims alleging that she owns land in Jordan, stressing that she has never owned any land in the Kingdom and does not possess even a single inch. She described the published claims as cheap and malicious fabrications.
Speaking to Amman Net, Ashrawi said that the allegations promoted by an individual identified as M.H. are completely unfounded. She emphasized that she is not a land trader and has no connection whatsoever to what has been circulated. Ashrawi added that she has formally requested an official document from the Department of Lands and Survey confirming that she does not, and has never, owned any land in Jordan.
Ashrawi welcomed the response of the Jordanian government and stressed the importance of publishing the official government statement, along with the response of the Social Security Investment Fund, on the same page where the false allegations were posted. She held those promoting the claims fully responsible for spreading false information that harms individuals and institutions without any legal basis.
Reports described by Ashrawi as false had claimed that she purchased around 12,000 dunums several years ago at a price of 25 Jordanian dinars per dunum, with a total value of 300,000 dinars, before later reselling the land to the Social Security Investment Fund at a price of 14,000 dinars per dunum, reaching a total value of 172 million dinars. Ashrawi denied these allegations entirely and without reservation.
Hours after the rumor began circulating, the Jordanian government officially denied the claims. Government spokesperson and Minister of Government Communication Mohammad Momani stated that the circulated information constitutes misleading rumors with no basis in fact and harms a national strategic economic project aimed at attracting investment and creating job opportunities.
Momani clarified that the land allocated for the project is duly registered in the records of the Department of Lands and Survey as property of the state treasury. He warned that the government will not tolerate the spread of such false information and will pursue those responsible legally in order to protect state institutions and safeguard public funds.
