‘Rule of law, human rights at centre of Gendarmerie Department’s mission’
Gendarmerie Department Director General Major General Tawfiq Tawalbeh on Monday said the department has developed a five-year stra-tegy to enhance security, stability and respect for human rights in the Kingdom.
In a press meeting at the Gendarmerie Department headquarters on Monday, Tawalbeh indicated that since its establishment under the directives of His Majesty King Abdullah in 2009, the department worked to provide security as an independent entity.
Tawalbeh pointed out that the Gendarmerie Forces’ mission includes the enforcement of law and order, the assertion of the rule of law, and the provision of logistical and technical assistance as well as manpower to the Public Security Department and Civil Defence Department.
During the press meeting, Tawalbeh pointed out that the department “contributes to making Jordan an attractive country for investors through its endless efforts to maintain peace and security in the Kingdom”.
In addition to carrying out security duties in the Kingdom, Tawalbeh added that Jordanian Gendarmerie Forces are taking part in the UN peacekeeping missions in Sudan, East Timor, Congo, Liberia, Haiti, Chad, Sierra Leone and the Ivory Coast.
Tawalbeh explained that the department uses advanced equipment and technologies in providing security, adding that Jordanian Gendarmerie Forces are considered among the top in the region.
Tawalbeh noted that by the end of the year, a highly advanced technical control unit will be introduced to help realise the department’s strategy.
