European Union, An Education Partnership with Jordan from Schools to Universities and Vocational Training
The European Union Ambassador to Jordan, Pierre-Christophe Chatzisavas, affirmed that cooperation between Jordan and the EU spans decades and is rooted in a strong friendship and shared history, noting that strengthening education remains one of the top priorities of this partnership.
He explained that the EU works alongside Jordan in building schools and supporting teachers, including in schools located in camps and in communities hosting the most vulnerable children. Particular emphasis is placed on reinforcing literacy and numeracy skills in the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The ambassador added that EU investments in Jordan’s education sector amount to approximately 300 million euros, covering primary education, higher education, and vocational training.
In a discussion with Jordanian student Majd Al-Ersan, he highlighted the importance of vocational training in supporting the Jordanian economy and advancing local industry. He announced that the EU will launch a 35 million euro programme to provide educational opportunities and accredited training certificates for Jordanians and Syrian refugees. This will be complemented by a separate 10 million euro initiative offering scholarships to students wishing to pursue vocational pathways after secondary school or within higher education institutions.
On study opportunities in Europe, the ambassador underscored the significance of student exchange and scholarship programmes. Around 800 Jordanian students and teachers benefit annually from these initiatives, which enable them to study at European universities while ensuring recognition of their qualifications upon returning to Jordan. Partial travel support is also provided to facilitate participation.
Concluding his remarks, the ambassador addressed Jordan’s younger generations, saying they have friends across Europe and that their future depends on openness to other cultures and on contributing to a world built on rules, peace, and cooperation among nations.
