Prince Ali defeats Mong-joon for FIFA Vice Presidency

Jordan's Prince Ali today ended Chung Mong-joon's 16-year tenure as a FIFA vice president when he surprisingly defeated the South Korean 25-20 in elections at the AFC Congress in Qatar.

The 35-year-old Jordanian royal, who heads the West Asian Football Federation, becomes the youngest member of the FIFA executive committee.

It was a big shock for Chung, who had been favourite to retain his seat and was thought to have the backing of AFC president Mohamed Bin Hammam.

Chung left the congress shortly after the vote without speaking to reporters.

But Prince Ali's campaign benefited from FIFA chief Sepp Blatter's support.

Blatter, who met with the Jordanian last month, was desperate for Prince Ali to win to ensure Chung would not be able to mount a challenge to his FIFA presidency, with elections taking place on June 1.

Earlier today, Mohamed Bin Hammam was re-elected unopposed as president of the AFC. The 61-year-old Qatari has held the position since 2002.

In elections for the two seats on FIFA’s executive committee, Thailand's Worawi Makudi retained his position.

Vernon Manilal Fernando of Sri Lanka was also elected in place of Japan's Junji Ogura who retired from the Ex-co.

The result signals a massive power swing from east Asia.

There are now no Korea or Japanese representatives on FIFA's ruling body.
