Environmental Expert: the rise of sulfur in the air threatens to increase respiratory diseases

The President of the Energy Conservation and Environmental Sustainability Society, Dr. Ayoub Abu Deiyeh, warned that if  elevated levels of sulfur in the atmosphere continue to violate Jordanian standards, then this could lead to high rates of heart disease, respiratory infections, and stroke.

He stressed that the level of sulfur emitted into the atmosphere as a result of biodiesel production exceeded Jordan's set ratio, 350 milligrams per one kilogram of diesel, and instead ranges from 10 to 11 thousand milligrams per one kilogram of diesel.
Dr. Abu Deiyeh spoke with "AmmanNet" and added that the reason for high proportions of sulfur is due to a lack of purification of diesel in oil refineries.

He said, "when you burn sulfur, you produce sulfur oxides which contaminate the air, soil, and water," and added "this spreads in the air and could cause diseases in the heart, respiratory tract, and could sometimes cause stroke."
He warned that there will be  high rates of disease if the situation continues at the Jordan Petroleum Refinery.

Jordan spends more than 100 million dinars annually, either directly or indirectly, on treating chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma caused by air pollution from burning oil products.
Abu Deiyeh criticized Jordan's lack of commitment to the standards it agreed to meet by law, which went into effect in May 2005.
