Political analyst Bassam Badarin highlighted a degree of confusion in the arrangements for the Sharm El-Sheikh summit, noting that expectations regarding what the summit might achieve have been somewhat inflated.

In an interview with Radio Al-Balad, Badarin pointed out that the summit faces several challenges, foremost among them the Palestinian issue and the Gaza Strip. He explained that moving from the ceasefire stage to the more complex phases, including post-war governance of Gaza and matters related to military power and the agenda of Israel’s far-right, adds a layer of uncertainty and caution to the summit’s planning.

Badarin also noted that the absence of key regional actors, such as Iran—which was officially invited but chose not to attend—impacts the course of events in Gaza and the wider region. Meanwhile, Jordan remains a central player in attempting to leverage the previous U.S. initiative to strengthen ties with the West Bank and address the Jerusalem file, raising questions about the summit’s potential to reshape American support for the two-state solution and halt Israeli expansion projects.

He added that Hamas has urged U.S. President Donald Trump and mediators to ensure that Israel does not resume its military operations in Gaza, emphasizing that the Palestinian side remains concerned about the unpredictability of U.S. policy, particularly given the current right-wing composition of the Israeli government.

Badarin concluded by stressing that, despite its exceptional significance, the summit continues to experience disorganization and last-minute adjustments regarding invitations and attendance, which heightens doubts about the tangible outcomes that may emerge from the meeting.
