Japan and UNICEF partner for safer water services for Syrian refugees in Jordan
Amman, 24 May 2026– The Government of Japan has contributed approximately US$250,000 to support UNICEF’s efforts to sustain lifesaving water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services for Syrian refugees in Jordan.
The project, which runs from 2026 to 2027, will help ensure continued access to safe water for refugee families living in Za’atari camp to meet their basic needs amid increasing seasonal demand and ongoing population movements. The project will also provide vocational and technical training for 50 Syrian refugees in areas such as plumbing and environmental health, helping strengthen community resilience while equipping them with practical skills that can support future livelihood opportunities, including upon return to Syria.

“Access to safe water and sanitation remains essential for the health and wellbeing of children and families,” said Marc Rubin, UNICEF Representative to Jordan, “We are grateful to the Government of Japan for its continued partnership and support for vulnerable children and communities in Jordan.”
“Realizing Jordan’s invaluable role as an anchor of regional stability, Japan has supported Jordan in its remarkable efforts to host nearly 400,000 Syrian refugees. In collaboration with UNICEF and Jordanian stakeholders, we hope our contribution will ensure continued access to life-saving assistance for refugees in the camp, thus preserving their health and dignity,” said Mr. ASARI Hideki, Ambassador of Japan to Jordan.
The Government of Japan has been a longstanding partner to UNICEF globally and in Jordan, supporting efforts to improve the lives of children and families affected by displacement and crisis. The contribution will help cover critical financial needs to ensure continued access to safe water and basic services for approximately 49,000 refugees living in Za’atari camp.
UNICEF continues to work closely with the Government of Jordan and partners to ensure sustainable and equitable access to essential services for refugee and vulnerable host communities across the country.
