Irish Ambassador from Amman: Independent Media Is Not an “Enemy” but a Partner in Highlighting Community Issues
The Ambassador of Ireland to the Kingdom, Marianne Bolger, emphasized the vital role played by independent media and civil society in building strong and healthy communities, stressing that supporting these sectors is a fundamental pillar for enhancing public dialogue and developing institutions.
Ongoing Support for Independent Media
In an exclusive interview with AmmanNet during the Second Regional Conference of the Community Media Network, Bolger expressed her delight in supporting the conference for the second consecutive year. She noted that Ireland’s own experience has proven that a strong civil society and vibrant media directly contribute to the growth and progress of the state.
From “Exclusion” to “Participation”
The Ambassador highlighted Ireland’s journey as a model, explaining that civil society was once outside formal structures, but its inclusion in government work brought about tangible positive change. She said: “It allowed us to hear everyone’s voices; disagreeing with a certain opinion should never mean silencing it. All perspectives must be heard.”
Media as a Mirror for Solutions, Not an Enemy
In a message directed to officials and decision-makers, Bolger stressed that independent media should not be viewed as an “enemy,” but rather as a tool that helps the state by shedding light on issues that require attention and improvement.
She added that the strength of independent media lies in its freedom from the constraints of major corporations, giving it broader space to express diverse viewpoints with honesty and professionalism. This, in turn, provides the public with a genuine platform to voice their needs and concerns.
Building Trust and Communication
The Ambassador concluded by affirming that continuous engagement between media and policymakers helps bridge gaps and serves the national interest. She considered the presence of free voices the greatest guarantee for the stability and prosperity of societies.
